CrossFit changed my life!

It all started a few years ago when a friend of mine introduced me to CrossFit (and through CrossFit to the Paleo lifestyle). I suddenly realized that I’m not just 40 years +, fat and unhealthy but it will only go downhill if I don’t turn 180° around and change my life. In the beginning, it only meant doing some exercises in the basement with some friends, but later as I felt more and more fit I came to the big decision to open my own box. Some of the most incredible moments are when I see people taking those big steps towards a better life, starting from my box let it be man or woman, young or old, fit or not as fit just yet.

I believe that the box is much more than a gym, rather a community where people share the positive feeling of CrossFit and help each other to lead a healthy life.

CrossFit has been a crazy ride.

A ride that I have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy to the utmost. As I have passed my L1 in October 2013, it certainly has become even better. CrossFit for me was just the next logical step. I’ve always been active. I played soccer and volleyball growing up and later ventured shortly into triathlon. Generally, I enjoy trying new stuff that challenges me physically and mentally but I was never really serious about anything. I mean everybody wants to look great naked and so did I but somehow, always after some time in the gym my motivation would fade.

Back in 2012 I tried something new, CrossFit. Looking back on it, I think it just provided all the features that I was missing in my normal strength training. I loved and still love the community, the competitiveness and being able to accurately measure how fit I am and how I progress. It has, without a doubt, become the best part of my day. Honestly, I think Greg Glassman is right and that the biggest adaptation definitely takes place between the ears. CrossFit is physically hard but more so mentally.

As a coach and athlete, I think the real personality traits of a person show during a grueling and hard workout. Will you hold yourself accountable to standards because maybe nobody saw it and it is just one rep or will you remain positive although your body and brain beg you to stop and will you be able to walk over to the one that just beat your score and genuinely congratulate that person although it drives you nuts that he/she is better than you? Well, it sure isn’t always easy to live up to those standards but I love CrossFit just for the fact that it gives me the possibility to prove my integrity on a daily basis. CrossFit at least for me is the chance to become a better person.

Originally, I started in my backyard with my sister and a bunch of friends from the neighborhood and we are loving every minute of it since that day.

In2014, I took my Level 1, which changed my view of fitness in so many ways. My goal is to help everyone achieve their goals and make their day a little bit brighter, so they can leave the box with a smile on their face.

I love coming to the box every day, so I can hang out with my buddies, have a ton of fun and kick some ass.

I started CrossFit while I was still a full-time philosophy graduate student few years ago. You might wonder: „Why would a PhD in philosophy do CrossFit?” However, Crossfit is philosophical from the very beginning. It starts with a question „What is Fitness?”; it provided an answer in form of a definition and it is in constant pursuit of the best methods for achieving fitness as defined. (No, its not about getting six pack abs in 4 weeks.) Additionally, CrossFit made its definition of fitness and the core of its methods freely available to anyone (if interested, read this.) It was this open source character and scientific nature that first got me hooked. But following their programming guidelines on my own in a globo gym for 10 weeks, I was mesmerized by the changes I experienced. After few years of training on my own, I did my Level 1 in November 2011 and started training others to help them experience similar changes for the better.

I started CrossFit in spring of 2013. My athletic background is in basketball, football and athletics, but this training method is different than anything else I’ve experienced before. What really caught my attention, is the intensity and diversity of the workouts and the community of the Box. I still cannot wait today to get back and train in that enthusiastic environment again. I see this as one of the biggest advantages: getting healthier and sharing a workout with like-minded people from all around the world. What make CrossFit special for me are the always changing workout patterns and the opportunity to test my limits every day. The reason why it is really efficient is the fact that it often forces you to step outside your comfort zone, and we all know that this is where the magic happens. For the durations of the WODs, you forget all the bad things; and get into a flow where nothing really matters. In my opinion there is so many things to learn and work on, it never gets boring. The people who are smarter than me say that in today’s world the secret formula for success is the following: “be different”. I can tell you the CrossFit is different, but what is even more important, it makes a difference.

I’m a CrossFit rookie but have been practicing with kettlebells for over 3 years. At first, sports became part of my everyday life but soon it turned into an addiction for any kind of movement be it yoga, running or climbing. Finally, I ended up completing the StrongFirst Level I certification in September 2015, and my goal became to share my love for fitness with others. I first came across Crossfit this year in RCD, while trying new sports in order to expand my skill set, and instantly fell in love with it. The ‘can do’ attitude of every participant on the classes regardless of the task and the strong community in RCD are things most coaches rarely find in life and can only dream of.

Outside the gym/box, I’m obsessed with traveling. This year I completed an awesome 8-month trip from Central America all the way to Canada along the west coast with my girlfriend. Being keen hikers we conquered 4000+ meter summits including the tallest volcano in Central America, Tajumulco – the view was well worth the effort. Feel free to ask me any questions on kettlebell training but don’t be surprised if I approach you with questions about CrossFit.
